Salamanca City Central School District in western New York approved $57,590 in June for Sally, a Realbotix humanoid teaching assistant. On 24 July the district paused the pilot after parents, the state teachers union, and the New York State Education Department raised privacy, safety, and ethics objections. Sally never taught a class.
📌 The Download
A silicone-skinned tutor – Sally has silicone skin, brown hair, and facial expressions, stays stationary, and pairs with a laptop avatar offering homework help and translation in 100+ languages.
The union objected loudly – NYSUT attacked Realbotix’s ties to the adult-entertainment industry, arguing a robot from such a company has no business in a classroom.
The state stepped in – Education Commissioner Betty Rosa wrote to the district raising concerns about the effect a humanoid robot may have inside a high school classroom.
Paused, not cancelled – The district says the pilot is on hold while it negotiates enhanced student data privacy agreements with the state and gathers more community input.
💡 What This Means for You
Technically possible is not the same as organisationally ready. Before deploying AI or automation that touches people, map who interacts with it, what data it captures, and who was consulted first. Salamanca is a reminder that stakeholder trust, not model performance, is usually the binding constraint.

Google has opened up YouTube’s internal AI prototyping playbook, and the headline number stings: roughly 95% of AI prototypes never reach production. YouTube’s answer is a sealed sandbox of Google AI Studio templates wired through a proxy to read-only production data, cutting validation from multiple quarters to weeks.

Only 5% survive – Google says about 95% of AI prototypes stall in validation, never making the jump from working demo to production system.
Read-only by design – AI Studio templates reach real playlists, videos, and channels through a proxy with restricted tokens, so experiments can never write back to core systems.
Live features, zero risk – Client-side wrappers inject prototype features into the real YouTube interface while code-splitting keeps experimental code out of production binaries.
Throw-away code on purpose – Teams build prototypes purely to test whether an idea deserves investment, then discard them and rebuild the winners properly. YouTube Recap and Ask YouTube came out of it.

This is containment thinking applied to AI, and it maps cleanly onto process improvement. Give your team a sandbox with real but read-only data, define what “good enough to keep” looks like before you start, and treat early AI output as a pilot to be discarded, not a deliverable to be shipped.

Unitree has launched the AS2-W, a wheel-legged quadruped that switches between rolling and stepping. Official specs list speeds over six metres per second, a continuous 16 kg payload, roughly 30 km of unloaded range, 45-degree slope climbing, and IP54 sealing, at a fraction of what Boston Dynamics charges for Spot.

Wheels meet legs – Four articulated legs end in powered wheels, so the AS2-W rolls efficiently on roads and steps over rocks, stairs, and debris without needing a second machine.
Runs a full shift – Unitree lists about three hours and 30 km unloaded, or over two hours and 25 km while carrying a continuous 16 kg load.
Built for rough sites – It handles roughly 45-degree slopes, 30 cm stairs, and obstacles up to 80 cm, carrying 64 to 128-line LiDAR under an IP54 dust and water rating.
Undercuts the incumbent – The AS2 platform starts near $36,700 through distributors, well below the $75,000-plus typically quoted for Boston Dynamics’ Spot.
💡 What This Means for You
Inspection robots just crossed a price and capability line that makes a pilot defensible. If you own inspection rounds, hazardous walk-downs, or material movement, start scoping which routes a machine could take over, and settle your reliability, cybersecurity, and human-accountability requirements before anyone signs a purchase order.
