Sam Altman is taking OpenAI beyond ChatGPT. The company has revived its robotics division and is recruiting hardware, systems, and ML engineers to build robots that can help construct data centres and power grids. Altman ultimately envisions everyone owning a personal robot.

• Hiring spree signals renewed push – After disbanding its robotics team in 2021, OpenAI is actively hiring robotics engineers. CEO Sam Altman posted on X that the company seeks full‑stack hardware, operations and ML talent, and co‑founder Greg Brockman described “rapid progress” toward AI that helps in the physical world.

• Infrastructure‑focused first – Altman says the immediate goal is building robots that support skilled workers constructing data centres, power grids and factories. Household helpers or warehouse sorters are not the priority; robots will help build the infrastructure powering the AI boom.

• Personal robot vision – Long term, Altman wants “everyone having a personal robot doing anything they need”. This marks the most explicit public commitment to proprietary robotics since OpenAI’s earlier investments in 1X Technologies and Figure AI.

• Safety and autonomy concerns – Critics note that robotics heightens debates over safety, autonomy and surveillance. OpenAI’s former hardware lead resigned in March 2026 over Pentagon deals and lack of guardrails; these concerns may intensify as robots leave the lab.
