🚀 OpenAI Just Released the AI It Says Changes What Work Can Be Delegated

OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra on September 3, calling it its most capable broadly deployed model and the first built to finish work end to end: reasoning, coding, research, and operating software on its own. President Greg Brockman closed the briefing with "Welcome to the AGI era," while Astra's cyber skills earned OpenAI's highest risk rating.

• It does the work, not just the answer – Demos showed Astra formatting legal contracts, drafting tax returns, laying out circuit boards, and building 3D games inside real software, with far less step-by-step prompting.

• Rated Critical for cyber – Astra is OpenAI's first broadly deployed model to hit the Critical cybersecurity threshold, so its most powerful exploit-finding abilities stay locked to vetted testers.

• Rolling out in stages – Cyber defenders in the Daybreak program get it first, then ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users and API developers in the coming days; free users wait.

• Built at Stargate scale – OpenAI says Astra was its largest training run yet, on more than 100,000 GPUs at its Stargate site in Texas, and the first model where other AI systems did much of the training supervision.

🚕 Tesla's Steering-Wheel-Free Cybercab Just Started Giving Public Rides

Tesla began offering public rides in its two-seat Cybercab, a robotaxi with no steering wheel and no pedals, in limited areas of Austin on September 3. Rides are free for now through the Robotaxi app. Within hours, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it is in contact with Tesla and evaluating the deployment.

📌 The Download

• Open to the public – Tesla AI chief Ashok Elluswamy said the service is "open to the entire public," though only inside select Austin neighborhoods, and riders can pick a Cybercab or a four-seat Model Y in the app.

• Regulators are watching – NHTSA is evaluating the rollout because federal safety standards generally require human driver controls, which the Cybercab does not have.

• The fleet is tiny – Texas records show 45 Cybercabs among Tesla's 420 registered autonomous vehicles, against 988 for Waymo; production began in April and Musk warned early output would be "very slow."

• Free now, priced later – Rides cost nothing during the pilot, executives plan demand-based pricing pitched as "a first-class experience at coach price," and Tesla opened an interest form for fleet buyers.

🌐 ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok All Went Down at Nearly the Same Time

ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok all suffered outages within the same Thursday morning window on September 3, knocking out the three most-used frontier assistants at once. OpenAI blamed a routing error, Anthropic cited an infrastructure issue, and xAI pointed to an outage at its Memphis compute center. Cloudflare, AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud reported nothing unusual.

📌 The Download

• ChatGPT went first – OpenAI said a routing error starting around 7:43 a.m. Pacific made ChatGPT and Codex unavailable for some users, with a fix in place by about 8:17 a.m.

• Claude was out for three hours – Anthropic reported elevated errors across Claude.ai, Claude Code, Cowork, and the API, and marked the incident resolved at 9:16 a.m. Pacific, roughly three hours after it began.

• Grok blamed Memphis – Grok's status page opened its investigation around 6:30 a.m. Pacific, and SpaceX later apologized for "an outage at our Memphis compute center."

• No shared culprit found – Cloudflare said its services were "operating normally," and AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud reported no matching incident, so the overlap remains unexplained; Cursor also went down because it depends on Claude and Grok.

Treat AI like any critical supplier: keep source files and prompts outside the tools, keep a second model ready for key workflows, and write the fallback into your SOPs.
