GPT-6 Astra went live inside Microsoft Copilot and GitHub Copilot four days ago, which means the model that finishes computer tasks in roughly half the time is already sitting in your work tools. And nearly $1 billion has poured into construction robotics in a single year, which means the newest hire on a jobsite may never need a lunch break.

OpenAI says it has hit the goal it set in late 2025: an automated research intern, live by September 2026. The system writes code, runs experiments and troubleshoots under human direction, handling work that used to take a skilled researcher several days. OpenAI's next target is a fully automated AI researcher by March 2028.
📌 The Download
Goal met on schedule – OpenAI set the September 2026 deadline for an automated research intern back in the fall of 2025 and says it landed on time.
3.1 agent-workdays – Its researchers now direct 3.1 agent-workdays of machine effort for every eight hours of human labor.
Real money per head – The median researcher burns more than $600 a day in agent tokens at API prices, and the top 10% run past $7,000 a day.
Still needs a human – More than half of four-to-eight-hour tasks required at least one human intervention, and OpenAI admits it does not yet know how to do full self-improvement safely.

Microsoft has switched on OpenAI's new GPT-6 Astra across Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio, days after the model launched. GitHub Copilot made it generally available the same week. Astra is built for long, multi-step work: filling forms, wrangling spreadsheets, formatting documents and holding memory across an entire task.

Live in Microsoft's stack – Astra rolled out in Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio on September 4, and reached general availability in GitHub Copilot the same week.
Much better at using a computer – On the OSWorld 2 computer-use benchmark it finished 72.6% of tasks against 65.7% for GPT-5.6 Sol, averaging 40 minutes per task instead of 75.
Raw intelligence barely moved – Its Coding Agent Index score of 67.0 edges out Sol's 65.1, while the broader Artificial Analysis score was essentially flat at 61.2 versus 60.9.
A messy rollout – Access was staged, Pro subscribers were not first in line, and Sam Altman publicly apologized and offered banked limit resets.

The jump here is in doing, not thinking: roughly the same intelligence finishing office tasks in about half the time. That is a cycle-time gain, not an IQ upgrade. Contractor robotics use grew 45% year over year.

Past the pilot stage – BuiltWorlds' 2026 benchmarking report puts contractor robotics use up 45% year over year, with the pilot-only group nearly tripling.
Repetitive tasks go first – Dusty Robotics runs layout, Canvas finishes drywall, and autonomous excavators move earth on projects measured in millions of cubic yards.
