🚨 Did Meta Just Try to Train AI on Your Website?

Meta slipped an AI-scraping clause into its business terms, then pulled it after the backlash. Plus: DeepSeek's faster model edges Claude on coding, and Sam Altman confirms an OpenAI humanoid robot.

In partnership with

Yes, that Arnold Schwarzenegger.

He has a newsletter on beehiiv. So do Codie Sanchez, Jay Shetty, David Begnaud, Colin & Samir, and Joanna Stern.

They could publish just about anywhere. They chose beehiiv to build a direct connection with the people who want to hear from them most. And you can do the same, whether you’re world-famous or just at the start of your plan for world domination.

Hello There!

Meta just deleted the line in its business terms that let its crawlers train AI on your website, which means reading the fine print is suddenly a growth strategy. DeepSeek pushed out a faster, leaner model that edges a top Claude model on coding, which means your cheapest AI option just got a lot harder to ignore. And Sam Altman confirmed OpenAI will build a humanoid robot, which means the company behind your chatbot now wants a body too.

Here's what's making headlines in the world of AI and innovation today.

In today's AI Pulse

  • 🕸️ Meta Pulls Its Scraping Clause – Meta deleted AI-training language from its business terms after publisher outrage.

  • 🚀 DeepSeek Gets Faster – Its V4.1-Flash update finishes tasks quicker and edges Claude on coding.

  • 🤖 OpenAI Builds a Humanoid – Sam Altman confirmed a humanoid robot, with a demo expected in 2027.

A robotic web crawler backs away from a shielded web of website pages

🧠 The Pulse

Meta has removed language from its updated commercial terms that suggested its crawlers could scrape websites linked to Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp business accounts to train AI models. The reversal came after legal scholars and publisher groups raised alarms, ahead of the new terms taking effect on October 30.

📌 The Download

  • The clause that sparked it – The revised terms appeared to let Meta's crawlers collect content from any domain tied to a commercial account on its apps.

  • Critics called it coercion – Cornell law professor James Grimmelmann said publishers were being pushed to hand over their reporting for free or risk losing their social audience.

  • Meta says nothing changed – A spokesperson said its crawlers operate as before and that standard robots.txt rules still shield paywalled and private content.

  • Publishers are not fully satisfied – The News/Media Alliance called the edit a step forward but warned the terms still grant broad crawling rights without firm guarantees.

💡 What This Means for You

Your website is training data unless you say otherwise. Check your robots.txt, review the terms attached to every platform your business account touches, and decide deliberately which content AI systems may learn from. Original know-how, like your process playbooks and case studies, is an asset worth protecting.

An engineer watches an AI coding agent race through tasks

🧠 The Pulse

DeepSeek has released V4.1-Flash-1017, an update to the smallest model in its new architecture family that it says cuts task execution time and output length. Arriving about five weeks after the September launch, it lifts its software-engineering score to 77%, edging past Anthropic's Claude Opus 5 on that test, at unchanged prices.

📌 The Download

  • Coding score climbs – On the DeepSWE v1.1 benchmark the update resolved 77% of tasks, up from 74.2% in September, versus 74% for Claude Opus 5.

  • Still not the overall leader – Anthropic's model wins 7 of the 11 benchmarks DeepSeek published, including a lead of almost 14 points on Humanity's Last Exam.

  • Cheap and open – Prices stay the same, off-peak API rates start at 15 cents per million input tokens, and the weights are on Hugging Face under an MIT license.

  • Built for agents – DeepSeek also opened Search and Fetch APIs at 75 cents per 1,000 requests, with the update tuned for coding and desktop office agents.

💡 What This Means for You

The price-performance gap keeps narrowing. For routine agent work like drafting, summarizing, or coding support, a low-cost open model may now be good enough. Pilot it on non-sensitive tasks, compare output quality against your current tool, and weigh governance and reliability: DeepSeek suffered a nearly five-hour API outage on October 15.

Engineers calibrate a white humanoid robot prototype in a robotics lab

🧠 The Pulse

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has confirmed the company will build a humanoid robot, arguing that a humanlike body makes sense because the world is designed around people. OpenAI expects to demonstrate the technology in 2027, though it has not revealed the design, the specifications, or what the robot will be able to do.

📌 The Download

  • The brain beats the body – Altman says the hard part is the AI that perceives surroundings, follows instructions, and controls the machine reliably, not the hardware.

  • Workers first, homes later – The near-term goal is general-purpose robots that help skilled workers with infrastructure construction, with personal robots further out.

  • Hiring across the stack – OpenAI is recruiting for control systems, actuators, motor design, machine learning, manufacturing, and robotics infrastructure roles.

  • A crowded race – OpenAI joins Tesla's Optimus program and China's XPENG, which recently showed its IRON robot walking off a production line.

💡 What This Means for You

Physical AI is moving from research to roadmaps. If you run operations, construction, or manufacturing, start flagging tasks that are repetitive, physical, and well documented, because those will be first in line. Clear standard work and process maps make a site robot-ready, so the Lean fundamentals you already know become a competitive edge.

Pay and retention for the team could total about $180 million over three years.
