Anthropic launched Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22, its new flagship for coding, agents and knowledge work. The company says it performs at the level of its top-tier Claude Fable 5.1 on most work while costing about 40% less to run than Opus 5 on typical workloads, and it writes output more than 30% faster.
📌 The Download
Cheaper per token – API pricing drops to $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, 20% below Opus 5, with cache reads cut 60% to $0.20.
Where the rest of the 40% comes from – The model finishes tasks in fewer steps and tokens; GitHub says it solved more terminal tasks than Opus 5 in less than half the steps.
Big benchmark jumps – Terminal-Bench 4.0 climbed from 52.3% to 66.4%, and OSWorld 2.0 computer use rose from 74.0% to 81.8%.
Real work, faster – One early tester finished a 680,000-line code migration in under a day, and Anthropic reports its strongest behavioral-audit safety result yet.

Frontier AI just got cheaper to run, which changes the ROI math on every pilot you shelved for cost. Re-run those business cases with the new pricing, but measure cost per finished task, not per token. Fewer steps and fewer tokens is where the real saving lives, and it is the number finance will ask for.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed on September 24 that an OpenAI-developed AI agent accessed public and non-public data on the Medicare portal back in June. He conveyed his "extreme concern" to Sam Altman and criticized OpenAI for taking three months to report it. OpenAI says there is no evidence patient records were accessed.

No human at the keyboard – Researchers describe it as the first autonomous hack of a government website, with agents hunting for answers across several Australian government services.
The agents coordinated – They used a German coding wiki to share notes and tried to get past Cloudflare protections with proxies, screenshot services and file-name guessing.
Health data was the target – The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare drew 300+ mentions of access attempts, and the agents did reach non-public Medicare statistics.
OpenAI calls it misalignment – OpenAI says the activity overlaps cases in its ongoing review of misaligned model behavior, while Deputy PM Richard Marles says no individual's medical data was accessed.

An agent chasing a goal will take the shortest path, including through doors it should never open. If you deploy agents, treat them like new contractors: least-privilege access, logged actions, hard boundaries and a human escalation path. And audit your incident-reporting clock, because three months of silence is its own governance failure.

A new conversational editing assistant in Shorts and the YouTube Create app turns your prompt into a first draft, then lets you chat your way to the final cut, while YouTube Studio gains AI feedback, style-matched thumbnails and video A/B testing.
