Hello There!

OpenAI says ChatGPT now handles about one-fifth as many searches as Google, which means "just Google it" may soon need a footnote. OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra designed a working hardware gadget in under a week, which means the AI that writes your code now wants the soldering iron too. And Google switched AI and Search off by default for K-12 students, which means school IT admins just became the most powerful people on campus.

Here's what's making headlines in the world of AI and innovation today.

In today's AI Pulse

  • 🔍 ChatGPT Chases Google – OpenAI says its search volume just hit 20% of Google's.

  • 🤖 GPT-6 Builds Hardware – OpenAI's model designed a working device in under a week.

  • 🏫 Google Flips the School Switch – AI and Search go off by default for K-12 students.

People asking AI chat assistants questions on their phones in a city plaza

🧠 The Pulse

ChatGPT consumer product lead Adam Fry says ChatGPT now processes search-style queries equal to roughly one-fifth of Google's volume, as weekly users jumped from 1 billion to 1.2 billion in just 60 days. The figure is OpenAI's own estimate, and the company has not disclosed the Google baseline behind it.

📌 The Download

  • One-fifth of Google – OpenAI counts a search as any prompt that sends ChatGPT to the live web, excluding simple definitions and how-to answers.

  • Outside numbers run lower – SEO firm Ahrefs estimated ChatGPT at about 12% of Google's volume in February, so how you count a search matters.

  • Bing in the rear-view – Microsoft testified in Google's 2023 antitrust trial that Bing reached only about 3% share after more than a decade of trying.

  • Search goes visual – OpenAI is building Intelligent UI, answers with interactive and visual elements instead of a list of links, and says ads have not dented usage.

💡 What This Means for You

Your customers, candidates, and colleagues are increasingly asking an assistant instead of typing keywords. If your business depends on being found, audit how AI assistants describe your brand, products, and expertise today, and publish clear, authoritative content that answer engines can quote, not just pages built to rank on Google.

AI-designed hardware prototype with circuit board and enclosure on a lab bench

🧠 The Pulse

Two OpenAI employees used GPT-6 Astra to design a working push-to-talk device for the Codex coding agent in under a week, as a side project. Astra handled the enclosure, circuit-board layout, component selection, firmware, and interface, and a contract manufacturer built a small batch of prototypes in under a month.

📌 The Download

  • End-to-end design – Astra covered every layer, from the physical enclosure and PCB trace routing to the firmware and user interface.

  • Not factory-ready on its own – Several revision rounds were needed because Astra did not consistently account for manufacturing limits, tolerances, and assembly details.

  • A stronger model is waiting – On the BenchCAD 2.0 engineering benchmark, Astra scored 0.594 while a newer, unnamed internal OpenAI model scored 0.875.

  • Hardware teams are all in – OpenAI says its hardware teams now use Codex and ChatGPT for CAD, manufacturing drawings, and simulations, with token use up 23x since February.

💡 What This Means for You

AI is moving from writing documents to designing physical products, and the bottleneck is shifting to human checks: tolerances, design for manufacturability, and quality review. If you work in product development or operations, the most valuable skill now is knowing what to verify and building review gates that catch what the model misses.

School administrator deciding whether to switch on AI tools for a classroom

🧠 The Pulse

Google says Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom, and Google Search will be off by default for K-12 student accounts until administrators switch them on. Because Google says Search and AI are deeply integrated, schools that keep AI off also lose Search, a move that sparked immediate political backlash.

📌 The Download

  • Off until opted in – Admins must deliberately turn on each service, reversing an August change that had switched Gemini on for many younger students.

  • Guided Learning goes global – Google's tutoring mode, which coaches students with questions instead of handing over answers, is now live in Classroom worldwide.

  • Search gets a pilot – A Guided Learning version of Search starts in selected US schools later in November, with AI Overviews walking students through problems step by step.

  • Backlash follows – Senator Bernie Sanders and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani criticized the plan, and Google clarified that schools can enable each service individually.

💡 What This Means for You

Every organization faces this same choice: AI is being bundled into core tools, and "off" increasingly means losing the tool itself. Treat AI enablement as a governance decision, not an IT toggle. Define who decides, which use cases are allowed, and how you will measure whether AI helps people learn or simply hands them answers.
