Hello There!
A $399 robot duck that roller-skates and picks up socks swept the tech press in 48 hours, which means the cheapest way into real robotics now costs less than a monitor. A thousand-student trial found ChatGPT lifted grades but not originality, which means the thing AI cannot do for you is exactly the thing you should be practising. And Anthropic turned Claude loose on other models' safety flaws and it outperformed human researchers four to one, which means AI is now auditing AI while we watch.
Here's what's making headlines in the world of AI and innovation today.
In today's AI Pulse
🐤 A Robot Duck Takes Over AI – A $399 open-source biped that roller-skates, tidies up and teaches you reinforcement learning.
🎓 ChatGPT Lifts Grades, Not Ideas – A 1,000-student trial split the gains between AI polish and human originality.
🧪 Claude Audits Other AIs – Anthropic's automated researcher closed 85% of the deception safety gap against 20% for humans.

🧠 The Pulse
Pollen Robotics, Hugging Face's robotics team, opened preorders on August 27 for Microduck, a $399 open-source biped just 25 centimetres tall. Within 48 hours it was everywhere, from Engadget to The Register, largely because it roller-skates and picks up socks. Underneath the charm sits a serious open reinforcement-learning platform.
📌 The Download
The charm is the distribution – A biped that roller-skates and tidies up got Microduck coverage across the tech press in two days, something no spec sheet achieves.
The price is the point – At $399 for a 25-centimetre biped, real reinforcement-learning hardware drops below the cost of a decent monitor.
Everything is open – The SDK, the MuJoCo simulator, the reinforcement-learning tooling and the shipped behaviour policies are all open source.
Simulate, then deploy – You train new movements virtually and transfer the policy onto the physical robot, the standard industrial robotics workflow at hobby scale. Units ship before Christmas 2026.
💡 What This Means for You
Two lessons, and the marketing one may be worth more. A serious platform travelled further because it does something delightful, which is worth remembering next time you present an improvement. The other: simulate-then-deploy is how automation gets validated on a real line, and it now costs less than a training course to practise.

🧠 The Pulse
A randomised trial with over 1,000 first-year Bocconi University students, published by OpenAI on August 27, split them into four groups: ChatGPT access, causal-reasoning training, both, or neither. ChatGPT lifted scores by almost a full point on a five-point scale. The reasoning training raised originality instead, and the combination kept both gains.
📌 The Download
A real randomised trial – More than 1,000 first-year students tackled a real marketing case, randomly assigned to one of four conditions.
AI bought a full point – Students with ChatGPT scored almost a full point higher on a five-point scale, with more ideas, clearer logic and more expert-like recommendations.
Training bought originality – Causal-reasoning training did not raise rubric scores at all, but text analysis showed those students produced a wider, more distinct range of ideas.
Both beat either – Students given both gained across the widest range of measures, matching the idea variety of the trained group and the scores of the AI group.
💡 What This Means for You
The rubric rewarded polish, and AI supplies polish cheaply. Originality came only from the group trained to ask why something works. Use AI for structure, completeness and speed, then protect deliberate time for questioning assumptions, because that is the half of the work the machine did not improve.

🧠 The Pulse
Anthropic published research on August 28 showing Claude can autonomously find and fix safety flaws in other AI models. Working across ten categories of alignment failure, Claude searched the literature, proposed methods, trained models and tested them. On deception it closed 85% of the safety gap, against 20% for human researchers.
📌 The Download
Ten failure categories – Claude worked across deception, sycophancy, reward hacking, privacy violations and jailbreaks, each measured against three to five benchmarks.
It beat humans four to one – On deception, Claude closed 85% of the safety gap while human researchers managed 20%, without degrading model capabilities.
The fixes scaled up – Methods found on smaller models stayed effective on models up to 4.7 times larger than the ones used during training.
Production scale worked too – Claude Sonnet 5 closed 65% of the safety gap on Claude Opus 4.8 in 60 hours, roughly 15,000 times more efficiently than standard procedure.
💡 What This Means for You
This is automated quality control applied to the auditor itself, and the same question applies as on any line: who checks the checker? As AI moves into inspection and review roles in your own processes, insist on knowing how the tests were designed, who validates them independently, and what the failure mode looks like.
